July 9/23 12:39 pm - Michael Woods Takes Historic Tour Win on Puy de Dôme

Michael Woods (Israel Premier Tech) became only the third Canadian in history to win a stage of the Tour de France on Sunday, and he did it on top of the iconic Puy de Dôme climb.

Woods and team mate Guillaume Boivin were part of a 14 rider breakaway that gained a massive 16 minute gap on the peloton, where the GC favourites were all content to watch each other and wait for a showdown on the Hors Categorie (Beyond Category) climb that finished the stage.

American Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) attacked out of this group from nearly 50 kilometres out. There was no real chase before the base of Puy de Dôme, and he looked to be in a strong position to win with a 2:20 lead. Four riders from the break were the first to take off after Jorgenson - Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Pierre Latour and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). Powless held the Polka Dot jersey, and was anxious to pad his lead in the overall standings for this competition.

However, initially, this group was not making much time on Jorgenson. Mohoric dropped the other two at three kilometres to go and was slowly chipping away at the lead, but it looked like Jorgenson was still safe for the win, until word came that Woods had attacked and was swiftly making his way through the remnants of the chase.

Woods caught Mohoric with a kilometre to go, as the road ramped up to 14%, and was just over 30 seconds down on the leader, who was finally showing signs of cracking. The Canadian was catching his rival quickly, and joined him with 500 metres to go. After sitting behind Jorgenson for a couple of seconds, Woods stood up on the pedals and attacked, and Jorgenson had no reply, eventually finishing sixth. Mohoric also collapsed, and was passed by Letour for second.

"I'm still having a pinch myself moment, I can't believe I did it" said Woods after the stage. "I really proud of myself, I'm really proud of my team ... it's special."

The riders also went from spectators crowding the roads to no spectators for the final four kilometres, which Woods admitted was disconcerting, "It was deafening until about 4K to go, I couldn't hear anything and then all of a sudden silence. My ears were still ringing and I had a lot of time to think, a lot of time to suffer ... I was just looking up the road and trying to make up as much time as possible on Jorgenson."

"I'm 36 years old, turning 37 this year, and I'm not getting any younger. I've always talked about winning a stage at the Tour de France and I finally achieved it. I just feel so fortunate to have so many great people behind me ... I've had some tough times over the last year, but I'm back on top, and I'm really proud."

"I wish I could say it was all planned [coming up from behind]. I wanted to be with Jorgenson up front, but it was just the way the cards played. It was challenging when I knew that I was probably the most marked man in that group, and I ended up not playing my cards super right. But I just had to be patient, and then when I got about 4K to go ... I didn't even really think about going for the win, I just thought about doing a time trial to the top. And, no matter how hard I went, it didn't matter about the result, I'd be proud of myself. My hardest was able to bring back Jorgenson. It's an iconic climb, beautiful, and this is super special."

In the overall race for the Yellow Jersey, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) managed to hold on to the leader's jersey, but conceded eight seconds to his rival Tadej Pogacar (UAE), who attacked in the final 800 metres. Going into the first Rest Day, the gap is down to 17 seconds. Woods jumped up to 18th overall from 32nd, taking back 8:37.
